1836年、ある出来事が起こりました。
アメリカ西海岸、フラッタリー岬の北にあるクイーン・シャーロット諸島に、
一隻の日本の難破船が流れ着いたのです。

その船は、鳥羽の港を出港し、幕府への献上品を積んで江戸へ向かう途中でした。
しかし嵐に遭い、実に十四か月ものあいだ太平洋を漂流した末、
遠くアメリカの地へとたどり着いたのでした。
船には、奇跡的に生き延びた音吉ら三人が乗っていました。

彼らは上陸後、先住民に捕らえられ、奴隷として売られてしまいます。
しかしその後、ハドソン湾会社によって買い戻され、
会社の幹部たちは、何とか彼らを日本へ帰そうと世話をすることになります。

この出来事は、ハドソン湾会社の幹部でもあった
マグドナルドの父、アーチボルトの耳にも届きました。
そしてその話は、少年だったラナルド・マグドナルドにも伝えられ、
日本という未知の国への関心を深めていきます。

この出来事が、彼の胸に静かに灯った冒険心に火をつけました。
やがて二十四歳になったマグドナルドは、
日本を目指す決意を固めることになるのです。

In 1836, a remarkable incident took place.
A Japanese shipwreck drifted ashore on the Queen Charlotte Islands,
north of Cape Flattery on the west coast of North America.

The ship had departed from the port of Toba, carrying tribute for the shogunate and bound for Edo.
Caught in a violent storm, it wandered the Pacific Ocean for fourteen long months
before finally reaching the American coast.
On board were three survivors, including a man named Otokichi.

After landing, they were captured by local Indigenous people and sold into slavery.
Later, however, they were bought back by the Hudson’s Bay Company.
The company’s officials took responsibility for them,
hoping somehow to return them to Japan.

News of this extraordinary event reached Archibald MacDonald,
a senior officer of the Hudson’s Bay Company and Ranald MacDonald’s father.
Through this story, the young Ranald learned about Japan—
a distant and mysterious country.

The tale quietly ignited his spirit of adventure.
And when Ranald MacDonald turned twenty-four,
he made the bold decision to set his sights on Japan.
